About the client
Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, supports EU Member States and Schengen Associated Countries in managing the EU’s external borders and fighting cross-border crime.
The geospatial analysis team in the organization plays a key role in processing and analyzing spatial data using ESRI ArcGIS software. As part of their responsibilities, the team is responsible for creating cartographic products for regular reports, as well as for acquiring and integrating data from external systems into the GIS environment. Performing these tasks manually was time-consuming and burdensome for the team's resources, which led to the need to optimize and automate the processes.
In response to these challenges, a set of dedicated map project templates and scripts were developed to automate the cartographic production process. The Python API for ArcGIS was used for this purpose, which allowed for the automation of repetitive tasks, thus relieving the GIS team. Additionally, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) scripts were created, which enabled efficient acquisition, transformation and loading of data from external systems to GIS.
