IDEMIA focuses on creating technologies that make the world safer, especially in the areas of identity, biometrics and digital security. The company offers solutions for governments, corporations and financial institutions, supporting them in identity management, transactions and data protection.
Cloud cost optimization was one of the key challenges of the project, requiring a thorough analysis of resource utilization and identification of areas where unnecessary expenses could be reduced.
An analysis of resource usage in systems was performed based on data from AWS Cost Explorer, Metrics server and Prometheus. The problem of unused resources on EC2 machines was identified, as well as incorrectly defined requirements for some applications embedded in Kubernetes clusters. This allowed selecting appropriate types of EC2 instances and correctly defining application requirements in terms of resources, which in turn enabled the correct operation of the Cluster Autoscaler component and positively affected the cost of most environments. An internal solution was implemented that allowed "sleeping" environments that are not needed all the time, which reduced the cost of test accounts by more than three times.
